Memos and destination tags: the field people skip

Safety

Some networks share one address between many accounts and tell them apart with a second field. XRP calls it a destination tag. Stellar and Cosmos call it a memo. TON calls it a comment. They all do the same job.

Why it matters

If the destination needs one and you leave it out, the funds arrive at the right address but belong to nobody in particular. Recovering them means persuading whoever runs that address to go looking, and plenty will not.

When you need one

  • Sending to an exchange or custodian: almost always yes. They will show the tag next to the address.
  • Sending to your own wallet: usually not. A personal wallet owns its address outright.

When you pick an asset that uses one, Swap Heaven shows the extra field and says what it is called on that chain. If you are unsure whether your destination needs it, ask before you send rather than after.
